Holy cow! Gulf Shores is right on the Coast 🤦‍♂ I'm looking to retire in S. Ala. hopefully next year, so I started looking for a place close enough for a day trip to the coast, and yet far enough away from the coast, to avoid direct hits from a hurricane. Looking at the Dothan area and that latitude line, where I could use the Florida Panhandle as a block from any direct impact of a potential hurricane! I think the "thumb" of Fla. steers most Atlantic/Gulf hurricanes towards Tx./La./Ms. where Ala. seems to be more protected by Florida.

We visited Fairhope, recently. It's a really nice town but with very little to do. Lovely folks too.

I think just like any real estate transaction, get an inspection and a lawyer even when buying a new home. BTW, we just vacationed at Orange Beach and checked out Foley and Fairhope, too. The one thing that stood out was how genuinely nice the people were at the restaurants and grocery store. We also talked to a few locals. It's one of the best vacations we've had. I was wondering what attracted you to the area. Restaurants are much cheaper than Chicagoland, too.. The waitstaff is more pleasant. Baldwin County is on our radar for a place to retire to.
